What a wonderful immersive bit of theatre at Darlington Hippodrome last night with the truly spine-chilling production of The Woman In Black, one of my personal favourites and starring the very talented John MacKay and Daniel Burke.

Simple, yet powerful, the show takes us to isolated location (Eel Marsh House) and tells of the reflection of Arthur Kipps on his experience with this terrifying place and why a certain woman there won’t rest.

The show is just stunning and the actors in it create all of the tension, slowly building up the atmosphere throughout.  I can’t recommend it enough, it really is phenomenal and truly terrifying in all the right places!

The set is simple and the special effects really bring the audience into the story very quickly, proof that ghost stories portrayed on stage don’t need to be complicated for that genuine scare factor.

The creepy soundtrack and voiceover effects quietly build up the tension and with superb acting there is such power in a glance, a movement or a swift costume change or light change.

A classic story brought to new audiences, this show would suit a student studying it for their exams or indeed any age of audience member who wants a fantastic theatre experience. I have seen the show 3 times now and each has been different so I don’t think people who have seen it before will be disappointed at all, the production just gets better and better and has had new elements whenever I’ve seen it.

My verdict:

The Woman in Black thrills and chills in equal measure…be afraid, be very afraid! This show will get under your skin and remind you just what supernatural, immersive theatre truly feels like.

Beware The Woman In Black!

Tickets available now the show runs until the 10th January in Darlington.
