A thoroughly entertaining evening as 9 to 5 exploded onto stage last night at The Hippodrome.
It was a first for me and I was pleasantly surprised how taken I was with the production, it had hilarious moments but just some amazing vocals from the cast which really blew me away!
As Doralee, Karla Tracey perfectly captures Parton’s warmth and charm. From the outset her voice is just beautiful to listen to with a flawless rendition of “Backwoods Barbie”.
Carter brings a powerhouse voice to Judy with her solo, “Get Out and Stay Out”, being a fabulous showstopper charting Judy’s transformation into an independent woman. She also has such excellent comic timing throughout.
Marvin’s Violet is equally impressive. As the capable office supervisor continually overlooked for promotion, she conveys the character’s weary frustration with real presence. Her number, “One of the Boys”, is energetic and well-staged conveying the message of workplace inequality between the sexes common in those times.
The office tyrant Mr Hart, played by Tim Rogers, is a walking embodiment of toxic masculinity played with lots of fun and antagonism.The character serves as a reminder of how attitudes towards workplace sexism used to be.
The scene between Mr Hart and Roz played so comically by Jessica Martin really was a joy to behold and thoroughly worthy of attention.
The whole cast really brought their A-game and encapsulated office life in the 80’s brilliantly.
Seeing an audience clapping along to the signature song at the end really showed how thrilled they were with this crowd-pleasing and lively production.
The show runs until the 8th August at Darlington Hippodrome!
Make sure to clock off and catch this feel-good nostalgic comedy…..working 9 to 5 doesn’t have to be a drag when you’re having this much fun!
