frankenstein darlington hippodrome 17/10/23

A truly frightening piece of theatre this week as the show based on the classic book started it’s run at the Hippodrome. Just in time for spooky season this dark and sinister production creates an unnerving atmosphere for it’s audience from the start. From the immersive set to the very intimate scenes; the show really brings the audience right into the heart of this creepy narrative.

The classic story is given a modern twist and this really works bringing old themes into the new. The themes of abandonment, loneliness and the question of whether humans have the right to create life and the morality of these decisions comes into debate with emotional effect. In particular the ‘monster’ role is very carefully crafted and was a very believable part throughout. Cameron Robertson plays this with passion and it’s wonderful to see..

The doctor played magnificently by Eleanor McLoughlin presents masses of manic energy and charm as Victoria, allowing her to be a very likeable character despite her mistake borne from her science obsession. Annette Hannah is excellent as lab assistant Francine. Lula Marsh brings some light hearted relief to the stage as Victoria’s adopted sister Elizabeth. Basienka Blake brings interest to the role of Doctor Richter, representative of a government with big plans for Victoria’s work.

As a production the show really creates a great atmosphere of intrigue and sparks lots of debate too. An excellent piece put together by Tilted Wig productions.

Tickets are available at Darlington Hippodrome now and the show runs until the 21st October.
