Dear Diary:Heathers the musical Darlington hippodrome 3/10/23

A murderous trip to Westerberg High for Heathers the musical at Darlington Hippodrome last night and what a show!

Having last watched the film at least a decade ago the musical re tells part of the original story and takes aspects of it into whole other directions as new interpretations often do.

The cast brought high energy and drama with stunning vocals and characterisation. The Heathers certainly shone and made their characters impactful and striking. You couldn’t fail to be drawn in to their dominance on the stage in their red, yellow and green attire.

Veronica and JD played by Jenna Innes and Tom Dickerson were troubled lovers battling teen angst and strong emotions. Their partnership was wonderful especially in the number “Seventeen” which is a beautiful ballad.

One of my favourite numbers was the unhappy ballad of Martha Dunnstock (Kingsley Morton) it really hit all the high notes.

The comedic performances from Alex Woodward and Morgan Jackson as Jocks Kurt and Ram really helped keep the sometimes heavy story line that bit lighter. Would definitely say the audience is more 14+ with themes of bullying and suicide.

Heathers is a rollercoaster of emotions and thoroughly entertaining. The evil of the Heathers who bully their way through high school parallel the true heroes of the story trying to make the school a better place (not those trying to murder but the supporting cast!)

The songs will be stuck in your head you have been warned. All in all definitely a show that brought the film Heathers back into the light in a wonderful way.

I was offered tickets for a review of the show.

The show runs from 3/10-7/10 at Darlington Hippodrome.
